Ethiopian’s Somali regional state Politics: Hotbed crisis and new development
OTP- The Somali regional state has faced waves of political unrest since the beginning of the year and people have started to remove from the power the, most strong and brutal president Abdi Mohamed Omar. He has been accused of human right violations and misuse of power. The region became politically hotbed since last months. No doubt under Abdi’s administration there had changed in the region and some extent of development.
Abdi who has been a close an ally with TPLF military officials has become a wolf in the wild after his friends including the former head of intelligence and defense minister were removed their positions by the new Prime minister Dr.Abiye Ahmed. Jawahir Mohamed, Oromo activist has been one most critic of Abdi and his administration and after his arrest, hundred youth chanting, Jawahir won celebrated in Oromiya regional state.
The interim president Mustafa Mohamed Omar has been welcomed by the people and is expecting many changes including, human right, and freedom of speech and judiciary reform.
People have high hopes and a new era in the Somali region. Unconfirmed nominations mostly educated and some western particular Europe and US are on the list of the cabinet.
The new leader of the region has been former UN employee in Somalia and high critics of the former president. His brother was killed by members of the police under the former president Abdi Mohamed Omar. The federal government took from Jigjiga all regional officials and members of ESPDP, Ethiopian Somali Peoples Democratic Party and removed the highest members.
Back in 2007 Liyu Police
In the year of 2007, after, ONLF has attacked Chinese oil field, diseased prime minister of Ethiopia Atto Melez Zenawi has established the Liyu Police, a paramilitary forces to fight alongside with 10, 0000 thousand Ethiopian Federal defense military in Somali region to root out ONLF. 9 villages were burned down and thousands were displaced and killed. The Liyuu police were also funded by UK development program in the region as stabilization in the region, later, UKcanceledd the funds and China have been funding the programs through the federal government in order to secure the oil field in the region.
Now, the Liyu Police abandoned the new region president after the removal of the leader Abdi Rahman who was a loyal to the former president Abdi Mohamed Omar. He fears and mistrusts the new administration since the arrest of his former boss and family close. Fears are in clouds and chief and elders are now negotiating with him. According to sources, thousands of Special Forces refuse to trust both federal and new administration.
ONLF and New government
ONLF, Ogaden National Liberation Front who has strategic and base support in the region welcomed the arrest of former President Abdi Mohamed Omar and now are expecting many changes in the region. Peace talks between the federal government and ONLF are expected. Most of the towns are waiting for the peace process and free election.
In Jigjiga, Capital of the region, protest erupted after 14 killed Somali people were brought, sources said that Oromo affiliated militia attacked in Tulli-Guled and Babile surrounding in Jigjiga. People are calling for changes in course of the war, accused federal and Oromo regional President as the main player. The President of Oromo Regional condemned the attack as Oromo state TV broadcasted his condemnation.
