Fleeing Ethiopians decry atrocities in own country: The Standard
By Boniface Ongeri: Sometime last year, security officers in Mandera County came across a group of terrified people at an unofficial entry point on Kenya’s border with Ethiopia. They listened as the group told of a horrid encounter with men in military uniforms. They claimed they were members of Ethiopia’s military who shot at them, raped women and set ablaze their homes and harvests in south eastern Ethiopia. The security officers did what has become routine: They recorded the foreigners in the Occurrence Book (OB) and later escorted them to Dadaab refugee camp, some 600km away. According to the OB, some of the people had deep wounds they claimed were inflicted with knives and machetes. They wanted refuge in Kenya. Records at the Mandera law court also show most of the Ethiopians charged with being in the country illegally opted to be taken to the refugee camp than being deported.
Analysis: 'Commission must stand up for human rights in Ethiopia'
The Swedish journalists Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye were arrested by Ethiopian military in July. Having entered the country illegally in order to investigate alleged human-rights violations in the closed Ogaden region, they now stand charged with terrorism. The Swedish government chose to act through so called quiet diplomacy, a course of action which has been criticized and which has also proven to be unsuccessful in the past when trying to free the Swedish journalist Dawit Isaac, who after ten years remains imprisoned in Eritrea. But choosing silence is not an option for those journalists who see it as their job to tell the stories that would otherwise remain untold.

Reports from Ethiopia from the All Ethiopia Unity Party indicate that suppression of independent political activity is becoming more severe. Opposition supporters are being jailed and beaten. The Electoral Board is meddling in the internal activities of opposition parties. Journalists have come under sustained attack, leading to self-censorship, and in some cases, to flight from Ethiopia. As reported by US State Department, the illegal searches; use of excessive force by security services in an internal conflict and counterinsurgency operations; restrictions on freedom of the press; arrest, detention, and harassment of journalists; restrictions on freedom of assembly and association; In addition to threats to human rights and democracy, the Meles regime's mismanagement of the economy is creating serious problems. Canada’s aid to Ethiopia bankrolling repression, says jailed Canadian’s lawyer
Maintaining that Canadian aid is supporting repression in Ethiopia, human rights lawyer Lorne Waldman has filed an application in Federal Court to block it.In his application, he is asking that the Canadian government be prohibited from contributing any more development dollars to the African nation to Ethiopia, through the World Bank or the United Nations Development Program. The application is a last-ditch effort to win the freedom of Bashir Makhtal, a Canadian sentenced in 2009 to life in prison in Ethiopia, the third largest recipient of Canadian official development assistance.

A gunshot echoed across the jagged shells of homes pulverized by battle. Obeying orders to "watch and shoot," a soldier had taken aim with his machine gun down a road bleached white by the sun, spotted a target and fired a round.Fighters from al-Shabaab, the selfproclaimed followers of al-Qaeda in Somalia, were dug in opposite the green sandbags of this front line position in the country's shattered capital, Mogadishu. This time, however, they fired no answering fusillade across the deserted street that served as "no man's land," sparing the Ugandan soldiers deployed against them. Incidents of this kind are played out every day in Mogadishu, where ordinary Somalis, wearied by years of war, ignore the crack of gunfire. And yet something fundamental has changed in a city that became notorious as the most dangerous capital in the world, and the setting for America's "Black Hawk Down" debacle.
